Free Browser Games: Play Instantly, No Download

These seven games load in a browser tab on a phone, laptop or shared computer, no installer, no admin rights, and in most cases no account. That makes them a different category from the free-to-play client games on our homepage, which do need a download and usually an account.

How we checked these

We confirmed each game's official domain, whether it asks for sign-up, and whether it carries ads or in-app purchases, using each game's own site. Browser games are frequently copied onto unofficial mirror sites with extra ads bolted on, so every link below goes to the actual original domain, not a catalog or mirror. We have not run our own hands-on tests; gameplay descriptions come from official information and public documentation.

From our studio

MapRaiders is a different kind of game from the quick drop-in titles below, we mention it only because readers here are often exploring free, low-friction ways to play. It combines real-world walking, running or cycling with territory strategy on a shared map, plus a collectible card game with commanders and decks played at home in a PvE/PvP arena. It is in open beta and runs in the browser on a phone or a computer; you can start without an account.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these has absolutely no monetization?

Lichess is the clearest case, it is run as a non-profit with no ads and no paid tier of any kind. Skribbl.io, Agar.io, Slither.io and Diep.io have no monetization in their browser versions based on their official sites; their separate mobile apps may include purchases.

Do any of these need an account to play at all?

No, all seven can be played without registering. Chess.com and Lichess let you play as a guest, though creating a free account is needed to save your rating and match history over time.
